At home, in fact, he has a wall of records --he was even mentioned in the short-lived HBO series, "Vinyl."
The longtime radio personality -- he worked 25 years spinning tunes and interviewing rockers at New York City-based WPLJ and K-Rock -- wanted to bring back a vibe that longtime rock fans seem to crave.
And so the Westchester resident -- he grew up in Eastchester -- has started a new section of his Peak show called “After 6."
"I used to do the 'After Midnight’ portion of my late night show on K-Rock where 'we let it all hang out,' but since that’s past my bedtime now, we made it 'After 6,'" he said.
Basically, the new format means there's no format ... no restrictions and no set playlist. He might play tunes with a cohesive theme or make great segues, feature some lost classics or tell tales of his escapades with rock stars past and present.
"What's great about it is that listeners get to hear what the original AOR radio was like when DJ’s had ultimate freedom and creativity in what they played," he explained.
As for why Fink wanted to try this out? “It’s because radio has become so homogenized and formatted over the years, I thought it might be fun to pull out some songs and artists that have gotten lost in the shuffle and present an hour that is less predictable and more personal to me.
"There are so many ways for people to listen to music today and I wanted to add something to my radio program that makes more sense and has an intelligent flow rather than just playing random songs one after the other.”
Jimmy Fink is on the air on The Peak at 107.1 FM and streaming online at 1071ThePeak.com from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. every weekday.
